Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

In this post, I am sharing a CV template or an example of a short curriculum vitae for academic applications. This type of CV can be created while you are still in graduate school and applying to academic positions or opportunities. The example I share here was my CV when I was a third-year graduate student.
The important thing is to start working on your CV sooner rather than later and then keep adding to it or editing as needed as you progress in your career. I am sharing this CV template here so you can see what sections you might add to your CV.
Update your Publications section
I used this CV template to submit my application for various conferences to give talks and/or present posters, to apply for grants, and eventually, to apply for postdocs. Note that earlier on in your grad career you might not have as many publications and you can fit them all under a single “Publications” section. This is what I have in the template below.
As you progress, you might want to make a “Selected Publications” section closer to the beginning of the CV to drive attention to your most relevant work, and then at the end of the CV, have a “Full Publication List” section. This looks both professional and gets the job done by highlighting your career’s most important work.
Highlight your research as an early career scientist
The following are the CV sections that I would recommend having in a CV that you are submitting to various applications during grad school. This will showcase your career as a well-rounded academic who is still early in their career while highlighting your research.
As you can see, sections related to your research are the most important and should be shown right away. Academia puts a lot of stress on research, and so, the stronger case you make for yourself as a researcher, the better off you will be.
Recommended sections in the CV template
- Education
- Current Research and Career Goals
- Awards and Honors
- Publications
- Talks
- Research Mentoring
- Graduate Coursework
- Teaching
- Outreach and Service
You can see how I have organized these sections below. Ask me a question in the comments!!
