Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

We are in a recession, people are getting laid off, and the government needs your help. In this climate, I wanted to point out job opportunities in the government sector that I hope you will find immediately helpful. I have been working in the government sector myself, starting with Booz Allen, since graduating with my Ph.D. from Ohio State University almost 5 years ago.
The author is writing this as a personal blog, not in any official capacity. I have no direct connection with the work I mention below, they are simply what I heard about recently and wanted to share as available early career advice.
My former employer Booz Allen Hamilton reached out
We’re glad you’re part of the extended Booz Allen family, and we hope you’re doing well. As we look forward to a new year, we’re reaching out to update you on some exciting changes that are happening at the firm.
At the beginning of this year, my former employer, the consulting firm, Booz Allen Hamilton reached out to me as part of their extended family (or people who still get emails), and I learned about some new developments at the firm. Thankfully, I am currently/still gainfully employed but wanted to pass these along to you.
Booz Allen is headquartered in the DC area and announced their new innovation center, The Helix, an “innovation center that showcases our emerging and transformative technology” which probably means more jobs, especially in the DC area, or at least a focus on AI work which I am guessing is more of a DC area activity. This is what I read on their website about The Helix.
Tomorrow happens here
For more than a century, Booz Allen has helped move critical missions forward. From accelerating the future of global defense, healthcare, and climate science to catalyzing intelligence breakthroughs and advancements in outer space, we deliver tomorrow’s solutions today. At The Helix, Booz Allen’s Center for Innovation, we demonstrate, in new ways, how our deep experience at the intersection of mission and technology helps the U.S. government solve its most demanding challenges.
The AI Adoption Studio
Located in The Helix, the AI Studio inspires you to become an AI champion through diverse mission stories, gamified interactions, and immersive experiences of leading-edge AI development tools, capabilities, and use cases to accelerate your mission.
Dayton vs DC area jobs
I should also point out that the DC area has several Booz Allen offices and I have heard that there the jobs have more flexibility with regard to projects, being able to move around, the number of opportunities, etc. Personally, I was on a client site in Dayton, Ohio, so I cannot confirm this with my own experience. But you hear things, so I wanted to share that. Dayton is a big hub too in its own way, but these larger companies (like Booz Allen, Raytheon, etc) can operate very differently from office to office. So keep in mind about that.
In the Dayton office, it was broadly felt that you had options to switch between fewer albeit large teams. So it was either work under Boss A or Boss B who led big teams. Or, be a part of a much smaller team under Boss C. So if you didn’t like any of those options, you might have felt a bit limited. Also, if you wanted to switch, it didn’t feel like it could happen within a reasonable time frame. So it might be quicker to change companies than teams. But many people were also happy in their team and remained or still remain there for multiple years.
Company culture and changes
I did see some people move from the Dayton office to the DC office. So, I know it is possible but I think it is better to pick the office where you plan to be for a while. The DC life might be more vibrant, especially for people who are not locally from Dayton or Ohio. They have offices in locations across the country, but I have worked only out of Dayton for them. Of course, they have remote job options too now but I am not sure how those work.
Booz Allen has been voted a best place to work by Glassdoor (among several other employee-based awards). I would caution that their exemplary workplace culture does not propagate throughout the organization as well as the company would probably like, and if I were to look for jobs there again, I would probably try closer to their headquarters where the culture and organizational changes arrive fastest.
Booz Allen is hiring. Where should you go to apply for jobs?
This is where I would start: https://careers.boozallen.com/teams/datascience
Found the following salary information about a Senior Data Engineer role to give you an idea.

The projected compensation range for this position is $81,800.00 to $186,000.00 (annualized USD). If you want to chat further about job opportunities, feel free to shoot a message on LinkedIn. I get messages from other companies too. While I am not biased toward or against Booz Allen, I did work there myself so if there are any specifics I can help to address I will be happy to take your questions. This blog does not exhaustively cover all job opportunities in the government sector due to time restrictions. I will try to share more opportunities as they come up or when I think of them.
