My “How to Postdoc” Kindle book will be FREE this New Year’s Week from Sunday, January 1, 2023, 12:00 AM PST to Thursday, January 5, 2023, 11:59 PM PST. Happy New Year!!!
How to Land Your Dream Postdoc is more famous than I thought!
Recently, I realized that this book is now listed on Walmart in its paperback form. I thought to myself… I wanted this book to reach people widely, but I don’t know if I intended to be quite that famous! Even Walmart sells it!
Oh well, I will take it! Also, remember that much of the content is covered in this blog for free anyway so no pressure to buy the paperback, but it is there as an option for those who want it.
I did not lie in the book though about academic contracts or temporary jobs having caveats as in they don’t often lead to a sustainable career in academia. I don’t know if that is the reason why one person gave this book a 1-star review. Other authors of these topics tend to be lifelong academics, not folks who transitioned outside of academia.
So I could see how my books might offend some people… the books aren’t for them though! They are for students who are trying to get a hang of things, and maybe even decide for themselves what they want to do. I don’t profit from academia so I am neutral on these topics. I will talk about what the book covers below while fully maintaining that you can find those same topics on the website here without the book.
About the book: How to Postdoc
How to Land Your Dream Postdoc – The Insider’s Guide: Postdoc Interview Questions, Successful Research Statement, Cover Letter, and Job Talk is the second book in my “How to PhD” series. This book has everything I wish I had known before applying to postdocs while trying to finish up graduate school.
I was working on my projects, writing my thesis, and defending. Many things were going on all at the same time, and I wish that a book like this had helped me to:
- organize my efforts,
- cut down on unnecessary steps,
- and still, succeed in getting interviews and offers!
This book is complete with actionable advice on
- How to write your research statement (sample provided)
- How to write your cover letter (sample provided)
- How to prepare for interviews (including answering interview questions)
- How to deliver a killer job talk on your research (sample provided)
Plus, I also include
- Story of all my postdoc applications
- The outcome for each one and what happened and why
- Insights and lessons from each postdoc application and interview experience
- Table summarizing my postdoc applications
This book is packed with value for you to reap the benefits from my experiences. Please take advantage and let me know any questions.
Lastly, if you are interested in alternate careers, then please follow my content on how-to negotiate and answer salary expectations questions, resume guide, etc. on this blog.
I share the same advice I would share with my closest friends. I sent these to a friend looking for a job in Dayton, Ohio. The Cheeky Scientist association helped me a number of years ago with this type of information as well.
