The pandemic is hard-hitting. It feels really strange sometimes and depressing at other times. However, I believe we can start living our dream through this global pandemic. I have suggestions for content to help you get inspired if you are feeling down.
Inspiring and optimistic leaders
You can gain inspiration and optimism by consuming the content of leaders who are devoting time and energy to give you that. Gary Vee (net worth: $160 million) has started Tea with GaryVee and Simon Sinek (net worth: $15 million) has started a book club on YouTube.
Job-seeking PhDs
Job-seeking PhDs, you can follow Isaiah Hankel’s work to help realign your career during a recession. These days, he is actively talking about how to recession-proof your career which is super relevant during this pandemic. Just as much as the pandemic is causing people to get furloughed and laid off, new jobs are being created. Certain roles are becoming more in-demand and certain sectors are surging.
You don’t have to have a Ph.D. to solve problems, though.
Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities and use your common sense. Instead of only consuming negativity, be a consumer of positive information during this crisis and draw inspiration and ideas. Problems always lead to a new opportunity. You simply have to be open to exploration.
I have personally found value from reading the work of my colleague Brandon Burdette who has been studying the impacts of COVID-19 on the stock market and unemployment.
Brandon wrote about unemployment in his post on LinkedIn:
The recent spike in unemployment is common knowledge. We saw the largest spike in unemployment claims during the final week of March with a ceiling shattering 6.8 million new claims filed. Although no succeeding weeks have overshot this record-breaking figure, each has still been its own staggering account of human displacement…You may think to yourself: “I have a pretty good mental model of what’s going to happen. What people don’t realize is… etc.” Sound familiar? I’m here to assure you — every model is wrong, some are useful. By the end of the year 2020, we will all have been very wrong very many times.
The above kind of study, too, can help to get inspired if you are feeling down. Studies, thoughts, ideas… can help to inform your opinion and response to the whole situation. It’s all about being prepared.
There will be a rainbow at the end of this storm.
